In brief
– Prices start at £7,995 on the road for Take up! 1.0-litre 60 PS – Retailer cars arrive from late February 2012 – On sale from 5 March 2012 - Three trim levels: Take up!, Move up! and High up! – up! black and up! white special editions available from launch – Three-door models available from launch, five-door models available from July 2012 – BlueMotion Technology models exempt from road tax and congestion charge up! has the potential to dominate its sector There is no doubt that the up! will redefine Volkswagen’s presence in the A00, or city car sector. It will bring new kinds of customers to Volkswagen, increasing our retail market share. The car combines Volkswagen quality and performance with great value: the UK motoring press all agree that it has the potential to lead the city car class. Auto Express said the car’s new engine “is a peach”, its steering “fingertip light, but extremely direct”, and its manual gearchange, “snappy and pleasurable to use." What Car? described it as the “plushest, best looking, roomiest and probably most chic city car in the market...We reckon the up! is going to give the Koreans a tough time and if it's sensibly priced it has the talents to be the best one of all.” Top Gear is of the same mind: “It’s good, the up!…good enough to give the entire city car class a real shake up. You didn’t expect any less, did you?” Why we’ve kept it simple A simple range structure and a simple choice of options makes buying easy. Engines and drivetrain Three petrol engines, all built from a brand new one-litre, three-cylinder drivetrain, offer exceptional efficiency and dynamic performance. The 60 PS BlueMotion Technology is forecast to emit just 97 g/km of CO2, so it’s exempt from both vehicle excise duty (road tax) and London congestion charge. 1.0-litre 60 PS petrol (five-speed manual) 1.0-litre 60 PS BMT petrol (five-speed manual) 1.0-litre 75 PS petrol (five-speed manual) Shift by wire for easy, economical driving Coming later in 2012, a new automated manual gearbox – a clutchless manual gear shift, known as ‘shift by wire’ – will offer customers improved fuel consumption and more comfortable driving. It’s based on a manual five-speed gearbox, with gears changed by a gearbox control unit using an electrical impulse. The control unit finds the smoothest and most economical change. Technology highlights These specification highlights are unique to up! and class leading in the A00 sector For a complete list of specification for each of up!’s three trim levels,
Maps & More It’s called Maps & More because it’s more than just a sat-nav. This portable unit also provides music, Bluetooth connectivity for two phones at a time and coaching on economic driving – all for one competitive price (it’s standard on High up! and the black and white special editions, optional on all other models). It docks conveniently onto a secure point on the dashboard which also serves as a charging point for the device and it can be removed to use as a hand-held sat-nav. It connects to the car's systems, such as rev counter, speedo and fuel economy calculator, so it can show customers how to save fuel by changing their driving style
City Emergency Braking A first for the A00 segment, the City Emergency Braking system uses a laser sensor to detect imminent collisions at speeds of less than 19 mph. Depending on the speed and driving situation, the City Emergency Braking system can reduce accident severity by making automatic brake interventions. The City Emergency Braking system is part of the driver’s assistance pack which is optional on all trims. up! black and up! white Black or white – this is the choice your customers have with the up! black and up! white editions. Both models have special equipment galore as well as some genuine customer benefits. The models are equipped with such features as 16-inch Classic alloy wheels, chrome exterior highlights, rear tinted windows from the B-pillar back, carpet mats front and rear and more besides. up! black and up! white will be available from launch. - New generation of Volkswagen Beetle unveiled in Shanghai, New York and Berlin - All-new vehicle draws design cues from original Beetle launched 73 years ago - Efficient engines and innovative features combine with heritage to make a ‘modern classic’ - On sale in North America in autumn 2011, then mainland Europe; UK early in 2012 Volkswagen has unveiled the latest generation Beetle in Shanghai on the eve of the city’s motor show, marking a new era in this iconic car’s history. The latest generation moves away from design of the New Beetle of 1998 and instead draws on cues from the original and Beetle Ragster concept shown in Detroit in 2005. It’s longer, wider and lower, giving a more masculine and dynamic appearance. The Beetle now measures 4,278 mm in length (+152 mm), 1,808 mm in width (+84 mm) and 1,486 in height (-12 mm). The track width front and rear, as well as the wheelbase at 2,537 mm, are also increased. Overseen by Walter de Silva (Volkswagen Group) and Klaus Bischoff (Volkswagen Brand), with Marc Lichte the team leader for exterior design, the car’s new proportions mean the roof extends back further, the windscreen is shifted back and the rear section is now more akin to that of the original Beetle. The boot capacity is a practical 310 litres, up from 209 litres in the 1998 model. The Beetle has four seats, with a split-fold rear seat for added versatility.
Inside the cabin, the Beetle’s designers created a modern, practical and distinctive appearance with easy to identify and ergonomic controls. Certain features, such as the glovebox and colour accent panels hark back to the original.
Three trim levels will be available – Beetle, Design and Sport – and each will be endowed with its own individual character and features. A wide range of innovative optional equipment will also be available, ranging from Keyless Access through satellite navigation systems and a panoramic sunroof to bi-xenon headlights and LED daytime running lights – all of which are available for the first time on a Beetle. In the UK, a choice of four engines will be offered: three petrol – a 1.2-litre TSI 105 PS, a 1.4-litre TSI 160 PS and a 2.0-litre TSI 200 PS; and one diesel – a 1.6-litre 105 PS with BlueMotion Technology. Thanks to the addition of Start/Stop and battery regeneration systems the Beetle 1.6-litre 105 PS is estimated to have a combined fuel consumption of 65.7 mpg and carbon dioxide emissions of 112 g/km. Two power trains will be available at launch in the UK – the 105 PS TSI DSG and the 160 PS TSI with six-speed manual transmission. The range-topping 200 PS power plant will follow in summer 2012 with both manual and DSG transmissions. The 105 PS TSI manual transmission and the 105 PS TDI with BlueMotion Technology will join the range later in the year. As well as being economical and environmentally sound, the Beetle is also built to be one of the safest cars on the road thanks not only to features such as standard ESP and six airbags but also a laser-welded and galvanised body structure which has one of the highest torsional rigidity values in the segment at 26,000 Nm/˚. In addition the range-topping engine, the 2.0-litre 200 PS, will feature standard XDS electronic differential lock as fitted to the Golf GTI.
When the original was launched in 1938, it was known simply as ‘the Volkswagen’, quickly acquiring a raft of nicknames from across the world. Whatever the name, its popularity is not in question, with 21.5 million sold in the past 73 years. New factory-fit options for the new Passat Saloon and Estate are now available. New Passat Saloon and Passat Estate High Beam Assist*: RRP £105 New to the Volkswagen range – when headlights are on full beam, High Beam Assist switches them to low beam when it detects on-coming traffic. Once the traffic has passed it switches the headlights back to full beam. *This option is not compatible with xenon headlights or Lane Assist. *For Passat S, the optional Convenience Pack is also required at an additional cost of £415 RRP. Ambient pack: RRP £130 Only available with Burr Walnut or Zebrano decorative inlays at an additional cost of £310 RRP. Automatic Distance Control with City Emergency Braking: RRP £675 (available with manual and automatic transmission, but not available with 1.6 TDI 105 PS and 1.4 TSI 122 PS engines) The latest generation of Automatic Distance Control (ADC) includes City Emergency Braking. ADC is essentially a version of cruise control that not only maintains a set speed, but (when activated) also maintains a set distance from the vehicle in front. If the vehicle in front decelerates, ADC decelerates. If the vehicle in front comes to a complete standstill, the system will apply the braking and stop the car. Front Assist is always active even if ADC is deactivated. If a vehicle in front performs an emergency braking manoeuvre, ADC warns and assists the driver, by increasing brake pressure to minimise the risk of a rear-end collision. City Emergency braking uses the same radar system and, when travelling at low speeds, will apply the brakes on behalf of the driver should it detect an object in front of the vehicle. The first images of Volkswagen’s all-new Golf Cabriolet have been revealed ahead of the car making its public debut at next week’s Geneva Motor Show.
The two-door, four-seater, front-engined soft top is the first Golf Cabriolet available since the Mk IV Golf, and builds on our heritage for producing popular convertibles which started with the original Beetle cabriolet and still continues today with the Eos. With sales of around 1.42 million units, Volkswagen is one of the world’s most successful producers of convertibles. But the latest Golf Cabriolet marks a whole new era of open-top motoring, boasting an electrically-powered soft top which can be lowered in just 9.5 seconds including on the move at speeds up to 18 mph, a range of efficient petrol and diesel engines as well as the highest levels of quality, refinement and safety.
Measuring 4,215 mm in length, 1,424 mm in height and 1,779 mm in width, the Golf Cabriolet is smaller than the Eos. Yet despite being 208 mm shorter than the Eos, the cars share a 2,578 mm wheelbase, resulting in maximum interior space for all four passengers. From the front the new model is unmistakeably a Golf, and adopts the now familiar ‘face’ incorporating the latest Volkswagen ‘design DNA’. The heavily raked windscreen gives it a sportier appearance than the hatchback model, while at the rear, new LED lights and a deep crease in the bootlid endow the new Golf Cabriolet with its own individual style. Inside the Golf Cabriolet’s appearance matches very closely that of the hatchback, adopting the same high-quality materials and design.
The new Golf Cabriolet will be offered in the UK with a choice of trim levels – S, SE and GT – and all will have a high level of standard specification which is likely to include 16-inch alloy wheels, a fully automatic electro-hydraulically operated soft top, DAB radio and Bluetooth.
As customers would expect from any car in the Golf family, the Cabriolet will be equipped with the highest levels of safety equipment. This will include an active roll-over protection system, ABS, ESP, airbags all round and a driver’s knee airbag.
In addition to active safety equipment, protection is built into the Golf Cabriolet’s design. A reinforced window frame and structural modifications to the underbody, side panels, cross-members and doors endow the new car with an extremely high level of torsional rigidity which benefits safety, comfort and refinement.
Also having a positive impact on noise reduction and refinement is the advanced design of the Golf Cabriolet’s fabric roof which has an additional exterior skin, as well as new window and door seals. The heated rear windscreen is integrated in the soft top with high-frequency welding. When the top is down, the upper side of the leading edge (the segment that directly connects to the windscreen frame) covers the entire top surface of the roof storage box, eliminating the need for a separate cover. This contributes to the very rapid opening time, and means the roof does not need to descend as deep into the bootspace. Even with the roof down, there is 250 litres of boot space.
A choice of six engines will be available: three from launch (a 1.2-litre TSI 105 PS, 1.4-litre TSI 160 PS and a 1.6-litre 105 PS TDI) and a further three later in the year (a 1.4-litre TSI 122 PS, 2.0-litre TSI 210 PS and a 2.0-litre TDI with 140 PS). BlueMotion Technology modifications will be applied to the diesel engines to ensure high efficiency and low emissions.Volkswagen UK plans to begin taking orders for the new Golf Cabriolet in July, with the first customer orders arriving in September. More details and price information will be available closer to launch
